Why Wool?

The inspiration behind the creation of Koigu Origins is our love for wool at Koigu. It’s no secret that us Landra women love sheep and the wonderful properties which wool provides us.

Some of the amazing qualities of wool include:

Wool is biodegradable. Wool is a natural resource, differing from synthetic fibres, wool biodegrades can biodegrade after a matter of months. Wool is made up of the same proteins found in human hair, keratin, which allows it to be broken down by microorganisms. This protein also allows wool too be held up against many climates, and water repellant. Since wool biodegrades quickly, it does not add to growing landfill volumes. Therefore wool plays an important part in the carbon cycle, and a natural fertilizer to continue in the cycle of wool.

Wool is naturally breathable. One of the most amazing properties of wool that us as makers most love is the temperature gauging. Wool is moisture absorbent, working to keep you cool in warm temperatures and hot in cool temperature. This is great during physical activity, as wool is also odour resistant.

Wool is a renewable fibre. Sheep, in contrast to synthetic fibres, each year produce a new fleece, with the help of air, water, sunshine and grass. for fibre to be natural it has to have the following characteristics; have a purpose in nature, be produced by a living organism and grow without human aid. These characteristics are all evident in wool.
